SETUBAL
The Península de Setúbal is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus and Sado rivers. The region, located south of Lisbon, is essentially marked by tourism and large wine-growing areas. From the great explorations dominated by the caste Castelão to the Moscatel, one of the national generous wines, this region always had a place in the history of Portuguese wines.
The Setúbal Peninsula presents two types of landscapes. One is characterized by its more accentuated relief with vines planted in clay-limestone soils, between 100 and 500 meters, taking advantage of the slopes of Serra da Arrábida that protect them from the Atlantic Ocean. The other area, representing about 80% of the total area, covers flat lands or with smooth undulations, rarely exceeding 150 m in height. These lands are composed of sand soils, making them very poor and perfectly adapted to the production of grapes of great quality.
The climate of the region is temperate Mediterranean with hot dry summers and mild and rainy winters. The average annual relative humidity is between 75% and 80%, which reflects the proximity of the sea.
The Peninsula of Setúbal comprises two Denominations of Origin (Palmela and Setúbal) and the regional wines designation Península de Setúbal. Most of the region’s wines use the Castelão variety in its composition. This is the traditional grape variety in the area and the legislation for the production of DO wines obliges the use of a high percentage of Castelão, for example the PD of Palmela has to be constituted by 66.7% of this variety. Sometimes the Castelão is mixed with the caste Alfrocheiro or Trincadeira.
The dominant white grape varieties in the region are Fernão Pires, Arinto and, of course, Moscatel de Setúbal, which is used in white wines and also in the generous wines of the Designation of Origin of Setúbal.
The most striking characteristics of the new wines of the Peninsula of Setúbal are the floral aromas in the whites and the soft spicy flavors and berries in the reds.
The generous wine from Setúbal made from the Moscatel and Moscatel Roxo grape varieties is one of the oldest and most famous wines in the world.
Moscatel de Setúbal is a generous wine of excellent quality, especially when aged for many years in oak barrels. It is a wine with a very intense aroma, orange blossoms, with a sweet and full flavor, which evolves with age for notes of nuts, raisins and coffee.
Produced in small quantities, the liqueur wines made from the Moscatel Roxo grape variety have similar characteristics to the Moscatel de Setúbal, however they are finer and have very complex aromas and flavors of bitter orange, raisins, figs and hazelnuts
